Every drain has a trap — a bend holding a plug of water that blocks gas from coming back up. In a fixture nobody uses, that water simply evaporates, and the seal goes with it.
Guest bathrooms, laundry tubs, floor wastes. Pour a couple of litres of water down each unused fixture and wait a day. This resolves a surprising proportion of mystery smells and costs nothing.
A failed seal where the toilet meets the floor lets gas past the pan. A cracked or disconnected pipe inside a wall cavity does the same and is harder to find.
Blocked vent pipework is another: the system needs air to let waste move, and when a vent is blocked the flow can siphon traps dry as it passes, breaking the seals from inside.
Sewer gas is not merely unpleasant. It carries methane and hydrogen sulphide, and a persistent smell indoors means an open path between the sewer and your living space. That path can also carry damp and pests.
